Members’ Volunteering for Veterans
 

     The National Society encourages members to support veterans and honor those who have passed. Members annually spend thousands of hours across the country serving veterans. We ask members to report all of their support for veterans to the Chapter’s Veterans Chairman. Some of these activities include:

  • Appointment to a VA Hospital Council, Voluntary Service or Center for Development and Civic Engagement (VAVS/CDCE);
  • Volunteering in a VA facility;
  • Visiting a veteran in a hospital, nursing home, or private home (includes visiting friends and family members);
  • Taking one or more veterans on an outing;
  • Donating a personal care item to veterans in a VA, Texas veterans hospital, or Texas veterans facility;
  • Donating cash to a VAVS/CDCE, Texas veterans hospital, or Texas veterans facility;
  • Donating a publication to a VAVS/CDCE, Texas veterans hospital, Texas veterans facility, or other organization whose primary clients are veterans;
  • Participate in the SAW Wounded Warrior Program;
  • Participate in recognizing or supporting veterans in cooperation with other organizations;
  • Decorating  (e.g., flags, wreaths, etc.) and removing decorations the graves of veterans (includes family and friends);
  • Attending and/or participating in the funeral of a veteran (includes family and friends);
  • Donating new or used clothing to a VAVS/CDCE, Texas veterans hospital, Texas veterans facility, or other organization whose primary clients are veterans; and,
  • Donating new or used (but working) items (e.g., TVs, computers, etc.) to a VAVS/CDCE, Texas veterans hospital, Texas veterans facility, or other organization whose primary clients are veterans.

    Members are asked to email the Veterans Committee Chairman with the following information:

  • The name of the VAVS/CDCE and role in which you are appointed;
  • The number of hours and miles driven volunteering in support of VA-related activities;
  • The date, veteran name, location, number of hours, and miles driven visiting a veteran in a hospital, nursing home, or private home (includes visiting friends and family members);
  • The date, miles driven, recipient’s name, facility name, and purchase price of personal care items donated;
  • The date, miles driven, facility name, amount, and description (e.g., cash, check, gift cards, clothing/transportation vouchers, etc.) donated to a VAVS/CDCE, Texas veterans hospital, Texas veterans facility, or other organization whose primary clients are veterans;
  • The date, miles driven, facility name, and purchase price of publications (e.g., magazines, paperback or hardback books, CDs, DVDs, etc.) donated to a VAVS/CDCE, Texas veterans hospital, Texas veterans facility, or other organization whose primary clients are veterans;
  • The date, miles driven, facility name, number of Wounded Warrior Coins/Certificates purchased, if you attended in business or colonial attire;
  • The date, miles driven, event name, location number of hours, and if you attended in business or colonial attire in an activity recognizing or supporting veterans in cooperation with other organizations (e.g., DAR, CAR, VFW, American Legion, etc.);
  • The date, miles driven, veteran’s name (if applicable), location, number of hours, and if you attended in business or colonial attire decorating  (e.g., flags, wreaths, etc.) and removing decorations the graves of veterans (includes family and friends);
  • The date, miles driven, veteran’s name, location, number of hours, if the veteran was killed in the line of duty, your role in the funeral (e.g., reading, dedication, bugler, rifle team, flag folder, pallbearer, etc.) and if you attended in business or colonial attire decorating (includes family and friends);
  • The date, miles driven, facility name, clothing description, new clothing purchase price, and used clothing original purchase price, donated to a VAVS/CDCE, Texas veterans hospital, Texas veterans facility, or other organization whose primary clients are veterans (donations to Goodwill, the Salvation Army, and similar organizations do not count, as their primary function is not veteran-related); and,
  • The date, miles driven, facility name, description of donated items, and purchase price of new or used (but working) items (e.g., TVs, computers, etc.) to a VAVS/CDCE, Texas veterans hospital, Texas veterans facility, or other organization whose primary clients are veterans.

     The above information can be emailed after each event. If a member volunteers at a facility throughout the year, the member can maintain a log of their activity on a spreadsheet and email it to the the Veterans Chairman at the end of the year. The Veterans Chairman can send a member an Excel spreadsheet to record his activity throughout the year.
