History of the Paul Carrington Chapter
The Paul Carrington Chapter (No. 5) was initially formed in May of 1930 as the Houston Chapter. During a reorganization of the Chapter in 1942, the Chapter changed its name to the Paul Carrington Chapter. The Chapter selected the name because he was a notable Revolutionary patriot (learn more about him), and several members were his descendants.
In May 1966, two influential members of the Chapter – Paul Wise and Walter Sterling – were unable to agree, and so Walter Sterling and a number of former members of the Paul Carrington Chapter formed the Houston Chapter. These two men eventually reconciled and became good friends again. In 2003, the Houston Chapter was dissolved, and many of its members joined the Paul Carrington Chapter. The Paul Carrington Chapter has strong and fraternal relations with the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Children of the American Revolution as one of its goals.
Meetings are held September through May, a Constitution Day meeting is held in September, a Bill of Rights meeting in December, and a George Washington Birthday Dinner in February. Honored guests at the dinner have included Jesse H. Jones, Governor William Clements, Governor and Supreme Court Justice Price Daniel, Senator Phil Gramm, Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice Thomas C. Phillips, Senator Harry Byrd, and many outstanding leaders of the City of Houston and the State of Texas.
The Paul Carrington Chapter is proud of its many patriotic and civic contributions. Examples of these include: an award given to the outstanding Eagle Scout; medals and scholarships given to outstanding JROTC and ROTC students at Houston area universities and local high schools; awards given to persons who have dedicated their lives public safety; Heroism Medals given to persons engaging in a significant act of heroism; and many other activities.
The Chapter donated a flagpole to the City of Houston, which was erected in Founders’ Memorial Cemetery – the oldest cemetery in Houston. In 1989, the Chapter donated to the City of Houston a monument commemorating the 200th anniversary of the United States Constitution, which was placed in Hermann Park. To mark the 200th anniversary of the Bill of Rights, the Chapter in 1991 dedicated an illuminated flagpole in Hermann Park near the entrance to the Houston Zoological Gardens.
